"Infectious and joyful….

a reimagining of the classic holiday tune with a touch of spice and everything nice.”

Keanna Faircloth, WBGO

Get ready to sway because this is a very different O Holy Night!

With an upbeat samba vibe, spirited jazz guitar lines and stellar vocals, As Is brings a new energy to this beloved Christmas carol.  Known for their inventive arrangements, the duo pairs Brazilian rhythms with jazz overtones and a Grammy-winning production team to inspire this joyful holiday track.

"Immense kudos to the wondrously adventurous husband and wife tandem of guitarist Alan Schulman and vocalist Stacey Schulman – collectively known as As Is - who boldly re-imagine “O Holy Night!” as a soulful, playful and delightfully infectious samba. It’s a unique and refreshing reimagining, taking us on an irresistible journey driven by the unbeatable combination of her sultry voice and imaginative phrasing, his crisp and snappy electric harmonies and the hypnotic grooves and dynamic shuffling energy of Brazilian born Lucini brothers, Leonardo (bass) and Alejandro (percussion).”

- Jonathan Widron, JW Vibe

“A provocative reading of the French Carol "O Holy Night.  With a fearless abandon, the two plop the chilly and ancient carol squarely into a humid samba, turning the holiday classic on its ear…an engaging performance not expected by most listeners.”

- C. Michael Bailey, All About Jazz

"They have reimagined a holiday favorite in a brilliant way...

When Native Brazilian brothers, Leonardo and Alejandro Lucini merged their South American rhythmic talents with Alan Schulman’s tasty guitar and Stacey Schulman’s crystal-clear vocals, they created a fresh sound for the familiar Christmas carol, “O Holy Night.”

"A lyrical guitarist and a skilled storyteller come together in life and music.  The sweet and sassy result is what makes AS IS.”

Debbie Burke, Tasty Jazz Jams for Our Times

Top 10 Billboard artists, As Is, soulfully coax listeners to reflect on the arc of life’s choices and love’s complications in this expressive interpretation of Joni Mitchell’s classic ballad. Alan Schulman’s lyrical guitar work weaves a life-worn tapestry for Stacey Schulman’s plaintive vocal phrasing.  Known for their imaginative re-expressions of 20th century classics, As Is takes audiences on an intimate journey through the world and words of the songs that have shaped our lives.

Both Sides Now appeared as a newly recorded bonus track on the duo's remastered debut album, A Love Like Ours, released on 5/27/22.  Originally recorded in Rome and Florence in 2015 as an acoustic duo project, the album enjoyed a limited release in the U.S. and was described as "nothing short of enchanting" (All About Jazz).

"Classics cast in a new light, with all the simplicity and clarity that a duo can bring the songs. Will make you want to sing along.”

- D.Oscar Groomes, O's Place Jazz Magazine

About As Is

The musical union of guitarist, Alan Schulman, and vocal stylist, Stacey Lynn Schulman, is the heart of As Is.   The couple - both on and off stage - have made a name for themselves for their imaginative re-expressions of 20th century song classics.  “They find new ways to approach the songs, ways that preserve the origins yet make out of them very personal statements” (Jazz Mostly). As Is approaches their performances with both the soulfulness and swing that's accessible, memorable and highly musical.  They have toured extensively in the US, Europe and Asia performing live and in the studio with mostly contemporary jazz talents including Marcus Baylor, David Binney, Christie Dashiell, Corcoran Holt, Kokayi, and Gregoire Maret, and the Americana/Blues artist, Oliver Sean.

After a limited release of their acoustic debut album in 2015, the couple's sophomore effort, Here’s to Life (2018) with Grammy-nominated producer, James McKinney, established the duo as compelling storytellers and arrangers, offering listeners new soundscapes that could swing hard while leaning into latin, classical, vocalese and Indian sonic accents.  Recorded at Eusonia Studios, NYC, and mastered by Emily Lazar at The Lodge, NYC (assisted by Chris Allgood), the album debuted at #1 on Amazon Jazz, #6 on iTunes Jazz and #9 on Billboard's Traditional Jazz Chart.  It was well-reviewed and embraced by jazz radio in 2018.

In December 2021, As Is released a new twist on a holiday classic with a joyful, samba-inspired, O Holy Night.   In May 2022, they re-remastered their debut album at the 10th anniversary of its recording and included the bonus track, Both Sides Now.  Both tracks have been submitted for consideration in the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.

Their 3rd full-length album, an exploration of “life as we feel it,” is expected in 2023.
